Join us for the seventh webinar in our series to explore materials research at University College Dublin, led by two esteemed researchers. Professor David Browne, from the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, will give a presentation entitled "Alloy solidification and gravity" and Dr Nuala Caffrey, from the School of Physics, will present on "Computational modelling of two-dimensional materials for quantum technologies and energy applications".
David Browne is Professor and Head of Subject, Materials Science & Engineering, where he leads the Phase Transformation Research Group, focusing on alloy solidification and bulk metallic glasses. He pioneered a European Space Agency-funded project in 2015 that achieved the first-ever X-ray monitored solidification of a metallic alloy in microgravity conditions.
Nuala Caffrey is an Assistant Professor in Computational Materials Research at the UCD School of Physics. Her research focuses on applying first-principles electronic structure methods to uncover the electronic and magnetic properties of complex quantum materials, with a particular emphasis on two-dimensional and layered materials.
