Una Europa team at Universiteit Leiden
una-europa@bb.leidenuniv.nlBoost your FAIR data expertise, share your research with peers and develop your international network!
This opportunity is open to doctoral researchers at participating Una Europa partner universities.
FAIR data – Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable – streamlines data sharing. It enhances transparency, supports cross-disciplinary research, and minimises duplication. Although applicable to all research areas, FAIR data principles are especially impactful in healthcare, environmental science, and policymaking, enabling a unified, sustainable approach to data management on a European and global scale.
Apply to be part of this unique week at the Universiteit Leiden: deepen your FAIR data knowledge and skills, and connect with an international community by taking part in the 3-day hackathon and 2-day international SOLID data conference SOSY2025 in Leiden.
Why should I participate?
- Gain an in-depth knowledge of what FAIR data is and why it matters.
You will learn what FAIR data principles are, why they are important and how the science-focused FAIR system works. We’ll also look at the roles of different stakeholders (academia, government, private sector) and the global implementation of FAIR principles.
- Learn how to apply FAIR data principles to your own research.
Work with and improve your own dataset. Develop your data stewardship skills and gain the information you need to be able to participate actively in the FAIR data discussions.
- Develop your professional skills and network.
You will join doctoral researchers from across the Una Europa network at this event and you’ll be guided by academic experts. Share your research results with peers and develop your teamwork and presentation skills.
All participants will receive a certificate of attendance. The total study load is 84 hours (3 ECTS).
What does the programme look like?
- 3 April, 14:00–17:00 Preparatory meeting (online)
- We will discuss the conference objectives, FAIR principles, and the importance of structured data management in research. We will also look at the hackathon, including team formation guidance and preparation tips.
- 21–25 April* Hackathon and presentation of research (in person in Leiden)
- We start in the afternoon of 21 April with a welcome session and dinner together. The hackathon takes place on 22–23 April and the FAIR data conference (including poster presentations) is on 24–25 April.
- 8 May, 14:00–17:00 Follow-up meeting (online)
- We will explore the possibility of publishing a joint paper prepared by participants in the journal Data Intelligence – Special Issue. We will also discuss how to implement FAIR data principles in your own work environment and discuss topics such as possible joint research.
*Please note that 21 April is Easter Monday, which is a public holiday in the Netherlands and several other countries.
Who will support me during the hackathon?
Meet the lecturers:
- Professor Dr. Mirjam van Reisen: Professor of FAIR Data Science at the Universiteit Leiden Medical Centre.
- Aliya Aktau: Doctoral researcher at Universiteit Leiden Medical Centre, specialising in FAIR Data Science.
Mirjam and Aliya will also be supported by academic staff from Una Europa partners and coaches for the hackathon.
More information about the programme and lecturers will be available in February 2025.
Am I eligible to take part?
This event is open to doctoral researchers who:
- Are based at participating Una Europa partner universities (visit the registration form to view the list of participating universities).
- Work within the focus areas of One Health, Data Science and AI, Cultural Heritage, Sustainability, Future Materials, and Europe and the World.
- Have access to a quantitative or a qualitative dataset that they will use during the hackathon.

What about costs and funding?
There is no cost to participate in the programme. Candidates from most Una Europa partners can apply for Erasmus+ funding from their own university to cover costs related to travel and accommodation.
For questions regarding financing, please contact your university’s local Una Europa team or international office responsible for staff and student mobility. The organising team at Universiteit Leiden cannot answer these types of queries, as funding availability is independently defined by each university.
How can I apply?
Apply by 26 January 2025 via the registration form to be considered for participation.
A committee, consisting of staff members from Una Europa universities (to be confirmed), will select participants based on their biography and motivation. Participants will be notified in the first half of February 2025.
This event is initiated as part of the Una Europa for Researchers activity under Una.Futura.
