Join us on 13 January for the first Una.Lecture of 2025! Together we'll explore the development of algorithms and the use of AI in the training of surgeons and assistants. This session will also share insights from Una Europa’s Staff Week, which in 2024 focused on AI for professional development.

This lecture is co-organised by Universiteit Leiden’s Una Europa team and SAILS – a Leiden university-wide initiative which facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

About the Lecture

Dr. Edris Mahtab, a thoracic surgeon, will speak about the work of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department at Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) to develop Virtual Reality (VR) tools for training purposes. By combining these VR tools with advanced algorithms, they have created an intelligent simulation system that personalizes training opportunities for surgeons and assistants based on their individual needs and progress. Through the integration of Extended Reality and Artificial Intelligence, this team is revolutionising the training of surgeons and assistants.

In addition, Dr. Samuel Max — a doctor and PhD candidate at LUMC's department of cardiothoracic surgery — will share insights from his participation in Una Europa's Staff Week, Embracing AI for Professional Development. This 2024 conference, organised and hosted at Uniwersytet Jagielloński w Krakowie, brought together participants from all 11 Una Europa universities to exchange insights and share the latest advancements in AI.

About the Una.Lecture series

Designed to foster dialogues between academia and the public, the Una.Lecture series gives you a glimpse into the incredible breadth and depth of expertise, insights and perspectives found across Una Europa's partner universities.

This lecture is delivered as part of our outreach activities initiated under the Una.Futura project.
