Developing an interdisciplinary training framework and curriculum for doctoral researchers and supervisors

Collaborating across domains to build the University of the Future is at the heart of Una Europa's mission. One way in which we are doing this is through the creation of a framework that supports a cooperative and interdisciplinary approach to doctoral methods training, with many benefits for doctoral researchers and supervisors.

Initial steps are well underway. So far, we have undertaken extensive desk research, consultations and interdisciplinary mapping exercises. We have held outreach events and a two-day design workshop – bringing together a diverse group of stakeholders from across the alliance.

During the hybrid framework design workshop at Universiteit Leiden’s campus in The Hague, participants shared their insights, institutional experiences, and innovative ideas. As a result, a dedicated working group was created and a strong foundation laid to start shaping how an Una Europa-wide Doctoral Interdisciplinary Methods Training (DIMT) framework could look in practice.

" Over the last two years, committed colleagues and doctoral researchers across the alliance have worked together to create a framework for advancing an interdisciplinary approach to methods training for both doctoral researchers and supervisors. It has been a pleasure and privilege to work with so many talented people to create a strong basis for advancing interdisciplinary doctoral research collaboration across the alliance. "

Have we piqued your interest? Find out more by reading our report on Doctoral Interdisciplinary Methods Training in Una Europa. The report outlines our goals, scope and proposed curriculum, along with our reflections and recommendations. It highlights the need for such a framework, topics suited for interdisciplinary inquiry and learning objectives.

As a next step, we aim to move forward from the reflection phase to concrete planning and implementation.

Programmes like this one, as well as the Una Europa Doctoral Programme in Cultural Heritage, offer doctoral researchers and supervisors opportunities to participate in high-quality, innovative and customisable educational programmes. Doctoral researchers can also expand their networks and expertise and access mentorship in niche areas. We see considerable demand and added value for such an endeavour.
