Joint micro-credentials

Una Europa’s joint micro-credentials target postgraduate students and professionals. The micro-credentials scheme will consist of a special courses of four or more MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses). Courses are designed to build a bridge between a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree or to provide an initiation to candidates switching fields of study. Candidates gain 20 ECTS on successful completion.

Our joint micro-credentials are unique for two reasons: Courses build on jointly delivered international MOOCs; and, as a partial master course, they will be accredited by all Una Europa partners.

We will pilot our micro-credentials scheme in the field of Sustainability.

Content and relevance

As a broad and horizontal field of study, sustainability has touch points with many other disciplines and our micro-credentials can therefore be embedded in many Master degrees on offer across the Una Europa universities. Students enrolled in our micro-credentials will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to work in a highly interdisciplinary context, to study problems from a systems perspective and to see interlinkages with other challenges. In particular, participants will study the theoretical concepts linked to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and the measures driving the implementation of the UN 2030 agenda.

The Una Europa Micro-credential in Sustainability will consist of five MOOCs provided by three Una Europa partner universities. The Micro-credential gives people across the world the opportunity to to virtually study at these three different universities, gaining insights and knowledge from multiple perspectives.

The five courses that comprise the Micro-credential in Sustainability are:

  • Introduction to sustainability
  • Political economy of sustainability
  • Biodiversity.now - multidisciplinary understanding on biodiversity, biodiversity crisis and protecting biodiversity
  • Climate.now - basics of climate change for everyone
  • Sustainability and the arts - between collective actions and cultural industries

Future Perspective

On completion of the first pilot, our micro-credentials are expected to evolve beyond five joint MOOCs, giving students the opportunity to pick and choose the MOOCs best matching their own fields of interest and specialisation.

The micro-credentials scheme in Sustainability is one of the Joint Innovative Formats developed under the 1Europe project.
