What is One Health?
One Health works towards the achievement of the UN's sustainable development goals (SDGs) and explores how the health of humans, animals, other organisms and the environment are inextricably linked. As proven by the Covid-19 pandemic, health challenges that stem from the complex interaction between humans, animals, plants and ecosystems call for a review of existing concepts and methods. Tighter collaboration across sectors and disciplines – including life sciences, public health and social sciences – is crucial.
The Una Europa One Health Summer School will bring together students and staff from across our Alliance and beyond to explore these interdisciplinary issues and work towards building solutions together. You will develop your knowledge of One Health and/ or Planetary Health by tackling a related global challenge, working with other undergraduate students from European and International universities to develop and pitch an idea.
Why attend the Una Europa One Health Summer School?
The Una Europa One Health Summer School will bring together students, doctoral researchers and staff from across the Una Europa Alliance and beyond to explore interdisciplinary One Health issues and work towards building solutions together. This unique Summer School features in particular:
- Innovative, interdisciplinary programme designed by world-leading academics from Una Europa partner universities
- A highly collaborative and interactive programme enabling you to work closely with your peers, as well as mentors and academics in a multicultural community
- A modular approach with a set of online and on-site elements, addressing different levels of expertise
Who can apply? Am I eligible?
This year Una Europa will host two One Health Summer Schools at KU Leuven, catering to the different educational stages of our student community:
- The One Health Summer School – General is organized for undergraduate and master's students currently enrolled at an Una Europa university who are in at least their third year of study at the time of application.
- The General Summer School will be held both online and on-site in Leuven from July 24th until July 28th 2023.
- After an introduction to One Health, you will work together with other students from international universities on-site in a group assignment to tackle a One Health-related global challenge. You will develop your transdisciplinary collaboration skills and broaden your knowledge of One Health.
- The One Health Summer School – Deep Dive is organized for doctoral researchers.
- The Summer School Deep Dive will be held on-site only in Leuven from July 31st until August 2nd 2023.
- The programme focuses on an all-round development of PhD students in transdisciplinary work and systems thinking with a focus on One Health challenges (for example food security, climate change, pandemic preparedness or antimicrobial resistance).
